Inaugural address by Professor Jabeen, holder of the Prince Claus Chair
Good governance is not universal Professor
Nasira Jabeen will deliver her inaugural address entitled ‘Good or good
enough governance in South Asia: constraints and possibilities’ on 2
April 2007 in the Academiegebouw (University Hall) of Utrecht
University. The concept of good governance must be determined for each
country and region. This is the only way in which ‘good governance’ can
possibly contribute to solving poverty and underdevelopment, according
to Professor Nasira Jabeen. On the recommendation of the Curatorium of
the Prince Claus Chair in Development and Equity, Utrecht University
has appointed Professor Nasira Jabeen as holder of the Prince Claus
Chair for 2006-2007. Professor Nasira Jabeen (born 1959) is
attached to the Institute of Administrative Science at the University
of the Punjab (Lahore, Pakistan). She is a published author in a
variety of areas, including administrative science, human resources,
and the position of women in society in Pakistan. Her analysis presents
a well-reasoned synthesis in which she shows the influence of
government (within a narrowly defined concept of governance) in
relation to national culture. In Utrecht, Professor Jabeen will be
based at the Utrecht School of Governance (USBO) in the Faculty of Law,
Economics and Governance (REBO). Drawing from her Pakistani background,
the primary focus of Professor Jabeen’s teaching and research will be
on the possibilities and limitations of ‘good governance’ as a concept
in the developing world. Prince Claus Chair The
Prince Claus Chair is an academic chair in the area of international
development held on a rotating basis and established by Utrecht
University and the Institute of Social Studies. The Curatorium of the
Prince Claus Chair is chaired by Princess Máxima. The academic chair,
which is held on an annual, rotating basis by outstanding young
academics from Africa, Asia, Latin America, the Caribbean or the
Pacific, alternates between Utrecht University and the Institute of
Social Studies. The objective of both institutions in sponsoring the
academic chair is to advance research and teaching in the field of
international development, in a manner corresponding to the views and
ideas of Prince Claus.
